This is one of our Rainwater Harvesting projects near Varthur lake in Bangalore . This is a farmland with run-off exceeding 120 Kilo-liter for a nominal 20 mm rain. Recharge wells are dug along the contour to tap the runoff and recharge the aquifer. One of the ways to manage large surface runoff is to have Recharge structures from the Upstream side. Surface Runoff carry a lot of silt . It is very difficult to estimate the silt load in the runoff. An effective method to handle this silt is to have secondary wells sometimes referred as Silt Traps. Recharge wells can be dug from the upstream side . Each Recharge well must be accompanied by a silt trap (with easy access for maintenance) . Installing the right number of wells at the right locations can prevent flooding and augment the groundwater . Rainwater harvesting and Recharge wells are perhaps the most urgent requirements for cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad reeling under severe water crisis and staring at an imminent groundwater depletion.
